About Hugo

Our semi-dry red wine is Hugo, named in honor of Juliettes father. Hugo Handley was born on January 31, 1906. He married Pearl Ross, and they had two lovely daughters together: Jeannette and Juliette.

In the 1920s, churches would hold proms” where young ladies could make a picnic lunch to be auctioned off to the highest-bidding young man, who would have the honor of enjoying that picnic with the young lady. Hugo had his eye on Pearl, so he purchased her picnic basket for the opportunity to court” her.

Hugo was full of life, always telling jokes and stories or pulling pranks on friends and family. He also loved to fish, especially in the evenings after a long day of work, and incorporating a picnic with Pearl made it even better.

Tragically, Hugo passed away of blood poisoning at the young age of 27, before Juliette was even a year old. His exuberant spirit is honored in our semi-dry red muscadine wine named Hugo, which is lively, full of muscadine flavor, and fun to share with family and friends.
