Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Muscadine?

Muscadines, Americas native grape, grow only in the southeastern United States. They are larger than many other grapes, with thick skins and multiple seeds. Some folks love muscadines for their sweet southern flavor. Others are impressed by the powerful health benefits of muscadines. Muscadines are truly the best of both worlds: they taste good, and theyre good for you!

What’s the difference between muscadines and scuppernongs (or bullises or bullets)?

Muscadines are a type of grape, belonging to the species Vitis Rotundifolia rather than Vitis Vinifera, to which more familiar wine and table grapes belong. All scuppernongs are muscadines, but not all muscadines are scuppernongs. Essentially, all the grapes in this category are muscadines, but in general, the purple or black ones are called muscadines while the bronze or green ones are known as scuppernongs. There are also other nicknames, such as bullises or bullets, typically derived from local or cultural vernacular.

Can you eat the seeds and/or skins of the muscadines?

It really is a matter of preference, but the short answer is yes! Some people do not like the texture or flavor of the seeds and skins, so they eat only the pulp and spit out the rest. However, what is true for many fruits and vegetables, is also true for muscadines: much of the nutritional value is found in the skins and seeds. That is why we make the most of muscadines by using the skins and seeds in our supplements.

Are your muscadines and/or products non-GMO?

Yes, our muscadines and all of our products are non-GMO.

Are your muscadines and/or products gluten free?

Yes, our muscadines and all of our products are glutenfree.

What is the difference between Purple and White Muscadine Juice?

Purple Muscadine Juice is pressed from the purple muscadines, and White Muscadine Juice is pressed from bronze muscadines. Purple Muscadine Juice has a dryer finish while White Muscadine Juice has a sweeter finish

Do you sell muscadine plants?

No. We purchase all our plants from Isons Nursery in Brooks, GA (800-733-0324) www.isons.com and Bottoms Nursery in Concord, GA (770-884-5661) www.bottomsnursery.com. Feel free to contact them to purchase your own muscadine vines and other plants.

Are your muscadines organic?

While our muscadines are not organic, we use minimal fungicides and herbicides in our viticulture. In fact, random samples of our muscadines and products are tested regularly, showing non-detectible levels of pesticides.

Why don’t you grow organic muscadines?

While muscadines are native to the south, they dont produce much fruit when grown organically. Our climate is hot and humid, perfect conditions for other challenges like diseases and weeds. So, in order to grow lots of high quality muscadines, we use minimal quantities of fungicides and herbicides. Of course, we always recommend the fresh muscadines be washed before consuming, as you would any produce.

What are the health benefits of Muscadine Juice?

Both the Purple and the White Muscadine Juice are full of nutrients and are more nutritious than other varieties of grapes. They contain twice as much vitamin c than seedless grapes. And, theres no sugar added – just the natural sweetness and southern flavor of Muscadines!

What is the difference between Muscadine Jelly, Preserves, and Sauce?

Paulk Vineyards Muscadine Jelly is made from muscadine juice, so it has a smooth consistency and sweet flavor, which makes a deliciously southern PB&J perfect for packing in school lunches. We use all but the seeds to make Paulk Vineyards Muscadine Preserves, so it has naturally chunky texture thats perfect spooned onto a warm biscuit. Paulk Vineyards Muscadine Sauce is a spiced preserve, best served with a pork roast or turkey and dressing, or pour it over cream cheese and serve it with crackers for a quick and easy appetizer. All our jellies are hand-crafted in small batches by The Southern Mercantile, located just a few miles from our family farm.

While you’re here, be sure to visit our tasting room and store. We even have fresh fruit in season!
You’ll have the entire home to yourselves!

We don’t mind you taking a walk around the vineyard, but please remember that this is our livelihood. We prefer that you not pick the fruit except in designated areas.
